Progression Lag: The Secret Penalty on Your Pay
Ever been stuck in a job for 5 years while you watched your male colleagues get promoted over you?
Welcome, WIMDI friends, to progression lag.
Unlike straightforward gender-based pay discrimination within a role, progression lag is a lot less visible. It makes you feel like you’re getting what you’re worth, but you’re quietly missing the opportunity to get the dramatic pay increases that come with promotions. That slow erosion in level (and pay!) contributes to women making nearly $600k less over the course of their lifetimes. Yikes!
This talk will focus on how progression lag affects your salary and leads to pay gaps.
Talk Outline
You’ll get:
- What causes the gender wage gap in Canada
- What progression lag is and how it undermines your pay
- The compounding effect of “small” progression lags
- 15 sneaky ways you get left behind (and what to do about it)
The goal of this talk is to give you the tools to advocate for working (and being paid!) at the right level.
