Nope! Rather than taking down all of your details and working up a resume on our own, we prefer to work side-by-side with our clients to write a new resume together. We think we get better results this way – plus it’s more fun and you learn more!
Great question! There are a couple of key advantages of working with someone to write your resume (as opposed to just handing it off to someone else to write):
First of all, most of us are pretty bad at picking out our good achievements – especially if we’re chronically modest types! So it’s common to have resumes that show off some of your skills, but miss the big headlines.
The vast majority of our coaching clients struggle to identify their wins, achievements, and relevant skills because they’re too close to the action to be able to see their work history clearly. Working with a WIMDI Coach side-by-side to write your resume helps because we work with you to pull out relevant job details as we write, so you never have to worry about your greatest hits being left off of your resume.
Secondly, you get to learn as you go! As you work with your WIMDI coach, you’ll learn everything we know about how to make a stand-out resume, from formatting tricks, to how to construct your bullet points for maximum impact, to what to highlight and where to catch a hiring manager’s eye. We’re big cover letter fans, but the answer is: It depends. Certain types of jobs are helped more by cover letters than others. And whether you know the hiring manager has a big effect on how helpful one is in landing you a first interview. We’re happy to help you suss out whether a cover letter is going to be a helpful one-page ad campaign that helps show off the specific ways your skills apply to the job or if it’s just going to be thrown straight into the trash.
